Vessel Safety Check & Display of Numbers - Registration/Documentation

February 4, 2005

The United States Coast Guard, Office of Boating Safety (now part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) has announced that there will be an increased emphasis on the proper display of State Registration letters and numbers and also the display of the Name and Hailing Port on Documented Vessels. USPS and USCGAux Vessel Safety Check examiners have been instructed to Fail vessels not in strict compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations and inform vessel owners that they will be at much greater risk for boarding, inspections and possible citations by federal, state or local law enforcement officers, if they are not in compliance.

The regulations with USCG Office of Boating Safety clarifications are available here (PDF format).
